Protect Granite Staters’ Voting Rights
Tell the House Election Law Committee to Oppose HB1520 and HB1382
Many state representatives continue to promote anti-voting rights bills that go beyond federal law, all under the guise of false fraud claims. HB1520 and HB1382 would impose new barriers for eligible voters and force election officials to enforce confusing standards. Don’t let a few Republican state reps risk silencing eligible voters who are already doing everything right.
HB1520 is a new piece of far right legislation being tested in NH that creates a new definition of “citizenship” for voting, including a concept of “New Hampshire citizenship.”
HB1382 requires certain overseas voters to provide proof of citizenship before voting, even though these voters are already eligible under federal law.
There is no such thing as “New Hampshire citizenship.” There is U.S. citizenship — and if you meet the legal requirements and are domiciled here, you have the right to vote here. HB1520 attempts to rewrite who belongs in our democracy by inventing new rules that don’t exist anywhere else. Overseas voting is already secure and extremely well-regulated. HB1382 creates unequal treatment, hurts overseas voters navigating complex voting rules, and families and citizens living or working abroad. These bills would create chaos, confusion, and legal uncertainty — all while solving no real problem. It violates the core New Hampshire value of Live Free or Die by letting politicians decide whose voice counts.
